Will Lawrence become a sanctuary city? Hundreds gather in Lawrence at a rally to support local immigrants and refugees.

A group of over 300 people gathered in Watson Park on July 12 for the “Don’t Look Away LFK: Immigrant and Refugee Solidarity Rally.” The rally was organized by a Lawrence group of Latino activists. State Representative Susan Ruiz attended the event. The Democrat from Shawnee told the people in attendance that the country needed more sanctuary cities.

“It was really nice to hear a politician support our cause,” said Maria Martinez*, who attended the rally. “She was so understanding and responsive, it really gave me hope that we might actually be able to make this happen.” Continue reading “Will Lawrence become a sanctuary city? Margarine Unie, a four-company union that produced margarine, and the Lever Brothers, a British manufacturing company that produced soap, signed an agreement to create Unilever in the United Kingdom in 1929. Initially, the agreement was signed to keep out of each other’s respective businesses. However, Margarine Unie and the Lever Brothers decided to merge their companies together, officially establishing Unilever as one of the largest industrial mergers in European history in 1930 (Unilever, 2019).

Currently, the food and consumer products manufacturer has two parent companies. Unilever PLC is based in the United Kingdom while Unilever N.V. is based in the Netherlands. Profile Feature

Tired of waiting for time and space to practice instruments like piano and guitar, Coleman Stanton decided to master the instrument inside him- his voice. At 12 years old, Stanton left behind the heavy instruments in favor of a craft he could work on anywhere and anytime- beatboxing.

Vocal percussion, or beatboxing, is a combination of noises and sounds made with the mouth, lips, tongue and voice to create music. Stanton has a distinctly low bass voice, which allows him to make deeper and more guttural sounds. He honed his craft for four years before trying his luck at public performances. A large chemical explosion and fire occurred this morning near Hutchison, Kansas.

Flames shot out of the Westlake Chemical Plant during the explosion. Six people are in the hospital, three of them in critical condition. Ammonia leaked from pipelines, making it hard to breathe. Fifty people were treated for respiratory problems. The blast occurred in the processor where a fertilizer is made. A cloud of chemicals blew across U-S Highway fifty, while the explosion rattled windows three miles away. The cause of the blast is still unknown.
